Measure the animal's temperature rectally. Carefully insert the thermometer's probe approximately 2–3 cm into the rectum, using lubricant. If the thermometer meets resistance, do not force it; try again at a slightly different angle. The reading will be ready in approximately 10 seconds.
The normal body temperature of dogs and cats is 38–39 degrees.
